What can happen if you get caught

Every case is different — the exact sequence depends on the circumstances. But here is what is typically involved:

•You may be stopped at a roadblock, or pulled over if an officer suspects you are impaired. A roadside breathalyser test is conducted.
•If you fail or refuse the test, you can be arrested on the spot. Your car may be impounded.
•A formal blood or urine test is typically done at the station to confirm your BAC. This result is used as evidence in court.
•Your licence is likely suspended while the case is being processed. Court dates can take months to be scheduled.
•Depending on severity — first offence, accident involvement, injury or death caused — penalties range from fines and licence bans to jail time and a permanent criminal record.
